Russia, Azerbaijan expanded relations to a great degree recently: Armenian political expert

14 July 2009 [10:17] - TODAY.AZ
“The release of Basic Principles on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement implies certain requirements for Armenia."
Akunk Analytic Research Center Director and former Armenian consul general to St. Petersburg Ruben Akopyan said.

“There is nothing new with the fact of release of the Basic Principles. This is the same Madrid principles which are repeatedly mentioned. It merely expresses the resolve of the leaders of these countries to facilitate the early settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” Akopyan said.

The political expert expressed some concerns with the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Today Armenia faces an unfavorable situation. Recently, relations between Russia and Azerbaijan are at historically high levels. This can not but affect Armenia because instead of refusing to participate in the Nabucco, Azerbaijan, in turn, has certain expectations from Russia on the issue of Nagorno Karabakh,” he said.

“The Armenian authorities should be able to resist coercion, appeals of those powers, which, unfortunately, I can not see. Maybe they discuss the problem behind the scenes, realize importance and seriousness of the issue, but in any case, it is not apparent. In turn, the main political forces should not only criticize the actions of the leadership, but also to offer real ways to address this issue,” he added.
