Armenian expert: The fact that Musawi is originally from the Iranian Azerbaijan will not lead to significant changes

12 June 2009 [11:10] - TODAY.AZ
"If Mir Hussein Musawi is elected the president of Iran, the Armenian direction of the Iranian external policy will not change dramatically", said Deputy Director of the Noravank foundation Sevak Sarukhanian.
According to him, the fact that Musawi is originally from the Iranian Azerbaijan will not lead to significant changes. All Iranian political leaders are Iranians, and only then the representatives of different ethnic groups, added S. Sarukhanian.

"A simple example: during the Karabakh war, when Armenia was under blockade, and the immediately opened border with Iran ensured physical existence of Armenia, Azerbaijani Belayati was the Foreign Minister of Iran", said S. Sarukhanian, adding that Musawi's election will not bring anything negative to Armenia. "I do not know whether it will be positive for Armenia. I suspect that it will bring nothing positive to it", he added.

Speaking about changes in Iranian foreign policy generally, Sarukhanian noticed that intensification of a dialogue with the United States, which might lead to normalizing ties between Tehran and Washington, will more likely happen if Musawi is elected.

"But normalization does not mean that Iran and the United States will become great friends. Normalization includes the establishment of diplomatic, lifting of sanctions against Iran and as a result of a maximum of dialogue - establishing trade and economic cooperation", he said. In general, Sarukhanian added that Iranian foreign policy, as before, will be aimed at formation of Iran as the most influential regional player regardless of who becomes a president.
