United States once again interested in the proposal on the joint use of Gabala radar station

11 June 2009 [14:55] - TODAY.AZ
Washington has again returned to the idea of placing missile defense elements in the territory of Russia and the Gabala radar station located in Azerbaijan.
This is clear from the statement by US Defense Secretary Robert Gates in the Senate, he made a day before. The Minister did not name any specific region, but experts believe that it is Russian Armavir, according to Nezavisimaya gazeta newspaper.

Alternative placement of missile defense would allow freezing missile defense placement in Poland and radar in the Czech Republic in return for Russia's assistance to protect Europe from Iranian missiles.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said Tuesday, speaking in the United States Senate Committee on Budget Appropriations, Moscow and Washington are discussing the idea of placing radar or information exchange centers on Russian territory.

Gates stressed that the prospects of the US-Russian cooperation in this area has slightly improved after Russia got aware of the threat, coming from Iran.

The US Secretary said that at the meeting planned for July 6-9, the Russian and US presidents could take steps to launch partnership in the missile defense system.
