Political scientist: The region is in anticipation of the Azerbaijani-Armenian agreement

10 June 2009 [15:35] - TODAY.AZ
Politician and Chairman of the Open Society Institute Azerbaijan Zardusht Alizadeh is convinced that the meeting of the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Saint Petersburg is followed by the expected conclusion of the Armenian-Azerbaijani agreement on resolving the Karabakh problem.

"In order to move this process forward the West is dropping the idea of forcing Azerbaijan and Armenia to peace through journalists, similar to the one that forced Serbs and Muslims in former Yugoslavia to accept the peace accord", Zardusht Alizadeh said in his speech at the third meeting of the club for political discussion on the theme: "The focus of the Iranian-Azerbaijani relations", held on Wednesday.

According to Novosti-Azerbaijan, Z. Alizadeh believes that Armenia will not make concessions which Azerbaijan demands.

Russia's position makes Armenia uncompromising",he said.

Characterizing the Madrid principles on which the talks on Karabakh will be continued, the political scientist said that they involve the release of the six Azerbaijani districts surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, with the exception of Lachin, the beginning of the return of refugees in the six liberated areas, Baku's solemn obligation not to use violence for the further settlement of the Karabakh conflict, opening of communications to Armenia.

"The issue of Nagorno Karabakh status is protracted: Armenia is seeking a referendum on the status exclusively within Nagorno-Karabakh, while Azerbaijan is going to hold a referendum throughout the country, according to the Constitution of Azerbaijan", he said.
