Deputy FM: Azerbaijan agreed to the proposals of the Minsk Group, but there is no desired compromise from Armenia

10 June 2009 [10:18] - TODAY.AZ
The problem of Nagorno Karabakh can be solved if Armenia changes the strategic assessment of its positions, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Araz Azimov on Wednesday, according to Interfax-Azerbaijan.
"We would like Armenia to think and be ready to take the necessary steps, both in their own interests, and for the development of the region", A. Azimov told journalists.

"These steps consist of the resolution of some difficult moments on the basic principles that we are now discussing. Among them, there are several important issues proposed by the co-chairs", added the Deputy Minister.

He noted that the Azerbaijani side agrees with the proposals of the Minsk Group, but there are elements that the parties should agree upon.

"At the same time, we still do not see the desired compromise and willingness to do so  from Armenia. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the leadership changed there, but we must act on the basis of the circumstances, and now, after the meeting in St. Petersburg, the effectiveness of follow-up, primarily, depends on the development of the position of Armenia", said the diplomat.

"If it was easy to achieve progress, we would have done this. But there are certain difficulties, which might have an objective side, but the Armenian side demonstrates more subjectivity and narrow political level, because the concept of principles, developed by the OSCE MG co-chairs, in my view, adequately takes into account the interests of the Armenian side, and at the same time, offers a model in the framework of international law.

If we are going to move in line with the model, the future of the conflict can be solved. Proposals and principles are clear, it is important to coordinate them and to achieve this agreement, fundamental changes in the position of Armenia are needed. We can not yet reach the stage of alignment, because this really needs drastic changes", said A. Azimov.

A. Azimov also said that Azerbaijan's position is clear and specific, and it is built on principles.

"Azerbaijan has great potential to protect that position, it includes not only the political and other resources of Azerbaijan, but also loyalty of the world community to these principles, on which Azerbaijan rely, is also among the important factors", noted Azimov.
