Number of municipalities to be reduced 36 percent in Azerbaijan

"As many as 993 of 2757 municipalities will be canceled in Azerbaijan," Azerbaijani parliament's Committee for Regional Affairs Head Arif Rahimzade said.

The Bill on Unification of Municipalities in Azerbaijan was discussed at a parliamentary meeting today.

Rahimzade said 1,764 municipalities will operate in Azerbaijan and two new municipalities will be established under the law. There will be a total of 1,766 municipalities. New municipalities will be established in Zabujuq settlement of Fuzuli region.

The bill was recommended to be brought up for discussions in the parliament.

Azerbaijan will hold municipal elections by late 2009.
