Day.Az interview with former diplomat and deputy of parliament Nasib Nasibli.
- What do you think of the road map of Turkey and Armenia?- It is clear why this document appeared before the so-called day of "Armenian genocide". The Turkish government wants to show that it is inclined to resolve the conflict with Armenia and therefore it agreed to prepare such a document. But unless I do see the full text of the "road map" (not the version offered by Turkish Sabah), I do not have a moral right to comment on the content of this document. But if finally it comes out that the "road map" does not contain points regarding the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, certainly, the attitude of every Azerbaijani citizen to this document will be negative.
- On April 24 Barack Obama got out of a scrape skilfully. He did not pronounce the word "genocide", yet he used its analogue in the Armenian language. How can you explain that?- On the whole, all US presidents have acted like this before. In order to get votes of the Armenian community during the election campaign, they promise them to help with the official recognition of "genocide" and when they are really elected, they start to realize the whole seriousness of this step.
It is because the recognition of the so-called "Armenian genocide" by the president would mean deterioration of the US relations with Turkey and the whole Turkic world. Therefore, Obama's action is clear to me. Well, let him pronounce the phrase "great tragedy" in the Armenian language and what? I do not think that in present conditions the United States can change the political course towards Turkey, as Turkey is a very important factor in the Near and Middle East and the United States will not reject ties with it. Turkey is important for the United States.
- The recent stiff statements of the Armenian president seem odd. Sargstan has recently told reporters that he will not visit Turkey to watch the football match, if the border does not open. Isn't this statement untimely?- President Sargsyan is playing for public. He realizes it clearly that the recent events have been perceived by different powers of Armenia ambiguously and therefre he makes a step behind considering the established circumstances within the country. But there is nothing surprizing about it. Let's see what happens forth.
- Today most diplomats and political experts voice opinion that the Armenian-Turkish border will open and the Karabakh conflict will be settled in some way by late 2009. Do you believe that these two events will happen so soon?- My personal opinion is that these problems will not be fully settled within a year. It is impossible to settle the issues having a long history within such a short term. Perhaps, we will see some progress on these two interconnected problems this year. But not more, at least so far.
