Armenian president: it is high time to accelerate talks on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

24 April 2009 [15:52] - TODAY.AZ
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan says it is high time to accelerate talks on the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and to adopt decisions, Russia Today television channel quoted Armenian president as saying.
"As it is known, the OSCE Minks Group and co-chairs from the United States, Russia and France are engaged in the resolution of the conflict. I have met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev three times since I took the office and I think one year is enough to understand each-other, to determine our positions and to form an opinion," Novosti-Armenia quoted Sargsyan as saying.

He said the major problem is the right of the Nagorno-Karabakh population to self-determination. The remaining issues will be soled easily once this problem is addressed.

"I am glad that Azerbaijani authorities have spoken about the resolution of the problem under international principles recently. Azerbaijani president confirmed to the Russian president and media several days ago that this problem must be solved under principles of international law," Armenian president said.

"Three principles were identified to solve the problem at the last meeting of the OSCE foreign ministers in Helsinki in late 2008: territorial integrity, right to self determination and non-use of force. The current talks are based on these principles and OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs are guided by them," Sargsyan said.

The president said the sides have achieved progress and there is chance to change the situation significantly.
