08 April 2009 [09:22] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan is now following the way of integration with the Euroatlantic area and is ready to expand cooperation with EU, with which ties are developing rapidly, said speaker of Milli Medjlis Oqtay Asadov Tuesday at the meeting with EU special envoy on South Caucasus Peter Semneby visiting Azerbaijan.

The sides discussed prospects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and EU and Eastern Partnership initiative.

According to Asadov, the activity of the committee on cooperation, conducted on the interparliamentary level encourages the development of bilateral relations. He said Azerbaijan supports the EU Eastern partnership program.

The speaker also reminded during the talk about mutual responsibilities, including recognition of sovereignty and inviolability of state borders. Asadov stressed the need to intensify EU efforts for the resolution of the Karabakh problem and release of the occupied lands of Azerbaijan from Armenian occupation.

The parliament chairman noted that there is a good legal basis for this, recalling the due resolutions, adopted by UN and Council of Europe on the unconditional release of the Azerbaijani lands, occupied by Armenia.

Semneby in turn spoke of the meetings, held in the framework of the visit in Baku, noting that they are able to contribute to the further cooperation between  Azerbaijan and EU adding that the Eastern Partnership initiative creates additional opportunities for cooperation between the states.
