The U.S. wants to organize a meeting between Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev in coming weeks.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has sent Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Matthew Bryza to the region, the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan told Trend News.

Bryza told Trend News from Washington that he will arrive in Baku this evening.

Prospects for normalizing Turkish-Armenian relations in light of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be discussed during the visit.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
