President of Azerbaijan: "Azerbaijan is ready for participation in the Nabucco project" - UPDATED

"Global energy projects have been implemented and new pipelines laid. These pipelines allow transporting oil and gas, produced in the Caspian Sea, to a number of countries. This is primarily important for ordinary consumers, as they suffer first during the conflicts".

Ilham Aliyev said the Nabucco participants must take into account all these factors.

"When the idea of the Nabucco project appeared, Azerbaijan was not on the list of the gas exporting countries. Yet, the situation has recently changed and now Azerbaijan should be viewed not as a transit country, but also as a state, which has potential gas fields".

The head of the state said the sides should spare no efforts for further strengthening of cooperation with foreign partners.

"As for the ties with Nabucco, we are eager to take part in this cooperation. We are confident that joint projects in the sphere of energy with EU will further strengthen our partnership. We must cooperate in this sphere, as such projects are a means for getting ties closer between the countries.

Azerbaijan plays a key role in Europe`s energy security, transporting its natural resources from the Caspian basin to Europe, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said at the Nabucco summit.

The Head of State pointed out it is necessary to meet economic demands. Currently, Azerbaijan is exporting its gas and oil to a variety of countries. Azerbaijan is a reliable partner, attracting attention with its activity in the region.

President of Azerbaijan noted Azerbaijan holds rich gas deposits. Azerbaijan`s gas reserve comes to 2-3 trillion cubic meters. It is enough to meet domestic need in the decades ahead, President added.

"We have a political interest in supporting Nabucco project, which communicated the Caspian Sea with Europe", said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, speaking at the Nabucco summit, held in the Hungarian capital.

He said Azerbaijan is ready to cooperate with the Nabucco gas pipeline project and supply natural gas.

The President also noted that Azerbaijan intends to play a role of a possible gas supplier and a transit country.
