Arif Yunusov: "Azerbaijani public had a hope for the West and NATO, which has recently melted away"

04 December 2008 [12:15] - TODAY.AZ
The only wish of the residents of Western Europe is no external threats for their personal life and developments in their countries, said famous conflict expert and political scientist Arif Yunusov, commenting on the fact that NATO on the level of Foreign Ministers did not present the membership plan to Kiev ad Tbilisi and decided to resume contacts with Russia frozen on August 19 after the start of the conflict around South Ossetia.

"This should have been expected. We always speak and think for Europeans and consider that they want to fight for democracy and try to bring justice wherever they go. People in our country consider that West dreams of turning Azerbaijan into a democratic state. Georgia is confident that West dreams of making this country democracy and is ready to help it if Russia tries to attack it. The list of the hopes of the residents of non-western states, especially on the post-Soviet country is long", said Yunusov.

He noted that in fact this is our own vision of Western European wishes.

"In the reality, their own security is more important for the Wester European States. Therefore, when there is a threat to their stable life, they prefer not the decisive actions but the policy of "calming down" and "pacifying". This is an old policy of Europe", announced Yunusov.

He said in this situation Azerbaijan must be more accurrate and careful in the relations with its neighbors.

"We must understand that in fact nobody is interested in us. They need our reserves, which are not eternal, however. One day we will be left without these reserves. We must not fully rely on the West. We must realize that there is no place for any romantic sentiments in the politics, there are only interests. This refers both to our external and internal policies", noted the political scientist.

According to him, the growth of anti-western moods is already observed in our country and the current actions of the West have merely accelerated this process.

"But I strongly doubt that it is possible to speak of the growth of pro-Russian moods. On the contrary, anti-Russian moods, based on elementary fare, have consolidated.

Merely, earlier there was a hope for the West and NATO within the Azerbaijani society but it has melted away significantly. And there observed a disappointment among pro-western powers and the growth of pro-Islamic ones", concluded the expert.
