Vafa Guluzade: "Depending on the political conditions in the world, Russia is ready to occupy even Baku"

24 October 2008 [15:43] - TODAY.AZ
"If political situation in the world allows it, Russia is ready to occupy even Baku", said famous political scientist Vafa Guluzade, commenting on the thesis of Konstantin Zatulin, first deputy chairman of the Committee of the State Duma of Russia on CIS issues and contacts with compatriots, according to which a package of the Karabakh resolution, envisioning recognition of "Nagorno Karabakh Republic" and return of seven regions.

"By his conclusion Konstantin Zatulin did not make any innovations. The plan of the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, according to which Azerbaijan recognizes independence of Nagorno Karabakh, ceding to Armenia not only Nagorno Karabakh but also Lachin and getting seven occupied regions of our country in exchange, has existed for long.

Thus, the fact that this plan is actively imposed by Russia to the conflict side proves that the Kremlin tries to include points about the need to demilitarize seven liberated lands of Azerbaijan and deploy the Russian army, under pretense of peacekeeping mission.

In other words. Russia will try to replace unofficial occupation of part of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia with the official occupation of the lands by Russia, for which it tends to deploy its forces there. Russia, which has its military basis in South Ossetia and Abkhazia currently tries to deploy its military bases in Nagorno Karabakh and in other occupied lands of Azerbaijan.

I consider that Azerbaijan will never allow such developments", said Guluzade.

He noted that official Baku should continue its external political course, insisting on the observance of the principle of the territorial integrity of the states, as a basic principle of international law.

"Azerbaijan must understand that Russia is ready to occupy even Baku. Therefore, our country needs to attain the firm support of the United States and the leading countries of Europe", concluded Guluzade.
