PACE observation mission reveals problems in the election situation in Azerbaijan

The observation mission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe revealed problems in the election process in Azerbaijan during the initial monitoring, Andres Herkel, head of the observation mission of PACE on election situation, told reporters Tuesday.

Herkel did not specify the problems, however.

"PACE held an initial election monitoring in Azerbaijan. The monitoring continues and the final report, prepared by results of the visit, will be made public on Thursday", Herkel said.

The PACE Observation mission also held meetings with the heads of the monitoring mission of the OSCE, European Union, Council of Europe, visiting Azerbaijan, as well as representatives of the IFES Baku office and chairmen and members of the Central Election Commission.

The PACE observation mission is visiting Baku to study the pre-election situation in Azerbaijan. The visit will last until September 18. In the framework of the visit the observation mission will meet with President of Azerbaijan, parliament chairman Oqtay Asadov, Interior Minister of Azerbaijan, Minister of Justice, chairman of the Constitutional Court, presidential candidates, chairman of the Central Election Commission, representatives of the civil society and mass media.
