Qudrat Hasanquliyev: "Leaders of Azerbaijani opposition take into account only their personal interests"

"If opposition parties really want democracy, observation of basic human rights in the country, they should join the presidential elections", said chairman of the United Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, who nominated his candidacy for presidential elections, Qudrat Hasanquliyev, commenting on the political situation in the country.

He said elections are another opportunity to familiarize people with a platform and opposition views of the reality.

"Yet, if the parties do not choose this way but state the non-provision of freedom of assembly and speech in the country, the announcement of boycott or non-participation automatically acts against them.

In period of the election campaign opposition has a chance to communicate with people and take part in TV debates. However, if opposition parties do not use these opportunities, how then are they going to conduct a fight?

By its non-participation in the presidential elections opposition just reduced importance of this process.

In 2001 the United States in cooperation with the leaders of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Musavat Party and National Independence Party arranged the guest-talks. During it the US called on opposition to put off the meeting promising to influence on the Azerbaijani officials. I have listed this example to show that these political parties have no their positions.

If international organizations told the parties about the need to take part in the elections, they will immediately join the process. It is necessary to inform the public that opposition leaders take into account only their personal interests, without thinking of the settlement of national problems", said Hasanquliyev.
