National Independence Party not to partake in presidential elections due to absence of a candidate

11 August 2008 [10:27] - TODAY.AZ
"As the National Independence Party of Azerbaijan has no candidate, the political structure can not participate in the presidential elections", said spokesman for press and agitation Ali Orujev.
He said that at the last session of the party's political council the following decision was adopted: the National Independence Party considers participation in presidential elections important and respects the urges of international organizations about the participation of opposition in this process.

"Yet, the party has no candidate. In this connection, the party can not take part in the elections. The format of party's participation in the process is currently unclear. The start to presidential campaign has been declared not long before, therefore, the political council of the party will define the form of participation soon.

The party may take part in the elections as a candidate or party activists are free to join this process independently. We may also support another candidate. All these issues will be settled after candidates for presidency are approved", announced Orujev.

It should be noted that party leader Etibar Mamedov refused to participate in the presidential elections.

As for another candidacy from the party, Orujev said:

"In order to define a candidate, the political structure should convene an urgent session. As is known, the party has been planning to conduct it long before, but as it is not able to find a place, the session is being postponed".

It should be noted that Etibar Mamedov took part in presidential elections of 2003. At that time the party candidate gained 2.92% of votes.
