Ali Hasanov: "President of Azerbaijan will be informed about the appeal of of the Council for Press regarding pardoning of the imprisoned journalists"

The Azerbaijan Council for Press has sent an appeal regarding pardoning of the imprisoned journalists and the President will be informed about it, said chief of the public policy department of the presidential administration of Azerbaijan Ali Hasanov.

As for declaration of the PACE president regarding possible appointment of a special rapporteur on political prisoners, in case imprisoned reporters are not released by September, Hasanov noted that the authorities do not perceive such statements.

"Journalists in Azerbaijan have been arrested by court decision and no one in the world can influence the verdict. Journalists have been arrested for their definite actions and courts are independent in passing a decision on their case. They have been arrested not for their professional activity. The authorities of Azerbaijan can only pardon them but pardoning requires definite procedure", said Hasanov.
