The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan presided by judge Enver Shadiyev considered the cassation appeal of editor-in-chief of Azadlyg newspaper Ganimat Zahid and newspaper correspondent Agil Halil.
Day.Az reports with reference to the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety that the due information was provided by journalists' defender Elchin Sadyghov.

According to him, the supreme court considered the newspaper to be unfounded and upheld the decision of the Appellate Court.

On September 5 of 2007 Economic development minister Heydar Babayev filed a claim against editor-in-chief of Azadlyg newspaper Ganimat Zahid and journalist Agil Halil to the Yasamal district court.

The appeal was caused by the article entitled "Matthew's Bryza's wedding financed by Azerbaijanis", which says that Economic Development Minister Heydar Babayev paid for the most part of the wedding of diplomats Matthew Bryza and Zeyno Baran.

The claim of the plaintiff says that the information is false and demands to refute it.

Judge Svetlana Ahmedova passed a decision according to which the newspaper must refute the article. In this connection, the journalists filed a claim to the Appellate Court, but their claim was not granted.

It should be noted that editor-in-chief of Azadlyg newspaper was sentenced to four years for hooliganism.
