New Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe to Azerbaijan has been appointed

Ms. Veronika Kotek has been appointed as a new Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe to Azerbaijan.
Veronika Kotek graduated with a bilingual law degree at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland and subsequently obtained an LL.M. in International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex in the UK where she was awarded the Human Rights Prize 2001-02 for her academic achievements. She also spent one term at the University of Alabama School of Law in the US in an exchange programme.

Since 2006, Ms Kotek has been in the Directorate General of Human Rights and Legal Affairs (DG-HL) of the Council of Europe (CoE) in Strasbourg with responsibility for co-operation activities on judicial professions and reform of judiciary institutions in South Caucasus, Ukraine, Russia and South-East Europe.

Prior to that, Ms Kotek served with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in their Moscow office where, amongst other tasks, she dealt with individual cases, interviewing refugee applicants and supervising a refugee counselling centre in St. Petersburg.

Ms Kotek also worked for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in their Copenhagen Secretariat. She also has academic experience in Switzerland.

Of dual Swiss and Czech nationality, Ms Kotek has, in addition to her mother tongues German and Czech, fluent English, French and Russian.
