National Movement of Armenia: "The ruling regime in Armenia used violence and terror and falsified elections"

08 May 2008 [09:33] - TODAY.AZ
The national movement of Armenia, uniting forces, supporting Levon Ter-Petrosyan, has released a statement on conduction of new presidential and parliamentary elections.
"By rebutting the disgraceful political, socioeconomic and moral system, created by the ruling regime  and forming a large scale national movement, the people of Armenia again rebelled against these regime in a single all-national movement during the presidential elections of 2008.

The method of peaceful, legal and democratic political struggle was chosen under the leadership of the first president, the founder of the Armenian Republic Levon Ter-Petrosyan and other political powers, which stood against the regime. It aimed to lead Armenia to the path of natural development by winning the presidential elections.

In a response to it, the regime, which falsified the presidential elections of 1993-2003 and which is responsible for the tragedy of October 27 of 1999 (terrorist act in the Armenian parliament) used violence and terror and falsified the elections of February 19 of 2008.

On April 12 of 2004 the regime, which was unwilling to execute the decision of the Constitutional Court on the referendum of trust, used force against peaceful protestors, demanding execution of the decision, while in 2008 the authorities planned and committed a terrifying bloodshed on March 1 for imposing emergency state and obtaining the desired resolution of the Constitutional Court.

March 1 will go down in history as a day of a great crime against Armenian people. The regime, which did everything to conceal the crime of October 27 of 1999,  tries to avoid responsibility for the crime of March 1 by fabricating the case against opposition.

We, the political powers, public organizations and citizens, unified in a single movement, declare that we do not recognize the results of the falsified presidential elections. Stability in the country will be restored only after new democratic presidential and parliamentary elections are held.

We demand to release all political prisoners urgently, stop persecution of the activists of the movement, hold independent international investigation of the events of March 1, annul laws, which ban meetings and stop propagandist terror. We will attain fulfillment of our demands. Our victory for the sake of freedom and democracy is inevitable".

It should be noted that the second congress of the national movement was held on May 2. Speaking during the congress, the first President of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan considered it expedient to transform the movement into a more stable structure, which will nominate single candidates and participate in all elections by a single list.
