05 May 2008 [15:18] - TODAY.AZ
An urgent session of the temporary Central Executive Committee of the Azerbaijan Socialist Party was held today.
According to the press service for the party, the session participants discussed issue of price hike on main foodstuffs in the country.

The party activists voiced anxiety with the rise in prices on bread and other essential foodstuffs and due to the information of shutdown of some large flour-making enterprises and deficit of bread in several regions of Azerbaijan.

The party took into account the government's decision to release rice and flour, imported to the country, from VAT and reducing customs tariffs to zero rate for another year to prevent further growth of prices on these essential goods.

At the same time, the party representatives agreed with the opinion of a number of independent economists that the rapid growth of prices on foodstuffs in Azerbaijan is caused not only by the world price hike on agricultural production, but also serious miscalculations.

The party representatives agreed that except a large processing plant Caucasus in Qabala, there has not been constructed anything significant in the Azerbaijani provinces.

Socialists also called on the government to fulfill its promise on holding the anti-inflation economic measures, ensure transparency of the activity of the National Bank and the Ministry of Economic Development.
