Araz Azimov: "If Russia has documents on Iran-destined cargo, why doesn’t it present them?"

28 April 2008 [08:59] - TODAY.AZ
"If Russia confirms that it has documents on Iran-destined cargo corresponding to the principles of international law, let them show these documents to us", said Araz Azimov, Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister, commenting on the detention of Russia’s cargo sent to the Iranian Bushehr nuclear power plant in Astara Customs House of Azerbaijan.

Azimov emphasized that Azerbaijan didn’t demand difficult or impossible things.

"Azerbaijan is UN member and this organization has its own norms, including the transit norms, which run that sender country should submit to the transit country appropriate documents for the special cargo. The document has to respond the questions about containers, receivers and final destination of the cargo. If Russia wants us to pay no attention to the rules of international law, Azerbaijan is a disciplined country and observes the international norms. If there are the documents, why doesn’t Russia submit it?".

Araz Azimov said Russia should reply to Azerbaijan not through the media, but through the Foreign Ministry and Embassy.

The Deputy Minister said that the problem didn’t carry any political motives.
