19 April 2008 [09:20] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty has made a statement on the recent media reports about the visit of Jeff Gedmin, President of Radio Liberty to Baku and his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev.

APA reports with reference to Radio Liberty that the radio’s local service says some media outlets misreported Jeff Gedmin’s visit to Baku and his meeting with the Azerbaijani President.

"Answering our audience and various journalist organizations, we state that President Gedmin met with the head of state, senior officials, leaders of opposition and heads of nongovernmental organizations in Baku on April 14-17. President Gedmin also acquainted with the activity of Baku bureau of Radio Liberty, expressed his satisfaction with the journalists’ professionalism and radio’s successful mission”, the statement says.

The statement also notes that after meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, President Gedmin released statement for media. The statement shows that at the meeting with the head of state, President of Radio Liberty expressed his serious concern over the state of media in Azerbaijan. President Aliyev said the concern was groundless, hundreds of newspapers were published in the country and that government supported Internet usage and foreign publications.

"President Gedmin also exchanged his views on this issue with senior officials. It was noted that the programs of the radio, which operated in line with the local legislation, were not limited. Media reports that Azerbaijani President said there was no need for Radio Liberty, are not true, and the suppositions on the closure of the radio are groundless", the statement says.

The local bureau notes that Radio Liberty operating for 55 years continues its unbiased activity. The radio is available at FM 101.7 frequency in Baku and AM 1530 and 1296 frequencies in the regions. It is also available via Internet.
