Rasim Aghayev: "The Kremlin is openly demonstrating its intention to provide comprehensive support to separatists"

17 April 2008 [17:00] - TODAY.AZ
"The Kremlin is openly demonstrating its intention to provide comprehensive support to separatists", said famous political scientist Rasim Aghayev, commenting on the instruction of Russian President Vladimit Putin set to the Russian government to provide material assistance to the population of Abkhazia and South Osseria.

"This is a logical continuation of the course, undertaken by the Kremlin in period of Mikhail Gorbachev and continued by Boris Yeltsin and now Vladimir Putin. The course implies assistance to separatists in the South Caucasus countries so that Moscow could influence them in case they intend to get rid of its impact on their external policy".

According to the political scientist, in case with Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Adjaria, Russia encouraged separatists in real by issuing Russian passports to them.

"In the result. nearly 80% residents of these three autonomies have a Russian citizenship. This means that if Georgia becomes part of NATO, Russia may raise issue of the need to defend its own citizens.

This means that the Kremlin is openly demonstrating its intention to provide comprehensive assistance to separatists to influence the countries of the region, which state that they do not accept Moscow's influence", the political scientist noted.

According to the political scientist, Russia may start issuing Russian passports to Karabakh separatists, like in case with South Ossetia and Abkhazia so that to justify its military and political aid to "Nagorno Karabakh Republic" by the "concern over the fate of Russian Citizens".

"On the whole, we should not forget that Russia has tools of pressure on Azerbaijan. If so it can be stated that the balanced, pro-American and simultaneously pro-Russian external policy, currently conducted by our leadership, is correct. Unfortunately, neither Azerbaijan nor Georgia are able to resist one of the most influential countries of the world, which Russia is now", said Aghayev.
