14 April 2008 [16:31] - TODAY.AZ
"The negotiations on the legal status of the Caspian Sea cover the issue on delimitation basing on the principles mostly applied in the international law", said Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov, whilst taking a stance on the meeting of five Caspian littoral states’ working group to be held in Tehran, APA reports.

Mentioning that Azerbaijan, Russia and Kazakhstan reached agreements and signed treaties on the status of the Caspian Sea, the Deputy Minister said the documents envisaged the delimitation of the Caspian Seabed basing on the median line principle.

"These legal documents regulate the efforts of the three countries in this direction. The negotiations with other countries also base on these principles. I can say it plainly that we are negotiating with Turkmenistan and Iran on the delimitation basing on the median line principle", he said.

Khalaf Khalafov also underlined that there were various elements and approaches while applying the median line principle.

"We should bring the positions closer and reach a complete agreement", he said.
