Leonid Kuchma: "Political and humanitarian formula of the successful development of Nagorno Karabakh in the framework of Azerbaijan must be found and implemented"

The due announcement was made by ex-president of Ukraine Leodid Kuchma.

"Despite the tragedy of events, which occurred in Nagorno Karabakh in the 20th century, we consider that political and humanitarian formula of the successful development of Nagorno Karabakh in the framework of Azerbaijan must be found and implemented", the ex-president said.

He supported assessments of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, who consider that 2008 can be market with a breakthrough at the current stage of the peaceful negotiation process on the resolution of Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno Karabakh and added that the complexity of the problem facing the conflicting parties can not be simplified.

"However, we consider that there are good grounds for establishment of mutual understanding between the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides. The algorithm of effective resolution of Nagorno Karabakh conflict should be based on two main components: provision of favorable socioeconomic and humanitarian conditions, maximal implementation of the principles of self-government for the population of Nagorno Karabakh, as well as the development of regional integration at the active participation of both Azerbaijan and Armenia", Kuchma noted.

He said there are prospects for more purposeful efforts of the European Union in the resolution of Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

"The European Union is, undoubtedly, interested in stability and economic development, security of the pipeline infrastructure of the region, which may play a key role in ensuring energy needs of the European countries", L.Kuchma concluded.
