Co-rapporteurs of the Monitoring Committee of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) on Azerbaijan Andres Herkel and Eugenia Zhivkova met with the representatives of opposition in Azerbaijan.
Ali Karimli, chairman of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party told APA that the meeting lasted for about two hours and focused on socio-political situation in the Azerbaijan and issues important for the elections.
They exchanged views on the problem of political prisoners, appointment of a special rapporteur on political prisoners in case these persons are not released, amendments to the electoral code, changing the composition of election commissions, freedom of assembly, and normal activity of political parties. Ali Karimli said that the main topic of discussion was Azerbaijan’s commitments vis-?-vis the Council of Europe.
“The co-rapporteurs offer Azerbaijan to solve the problem of political prisoners, otherwise a special rapporteur will be appointed. They also said they will insist on serious amendments to the Electoral Code,” he said.
The meeting was also attended by leader of Musavat party Isa Gambar, chief of National Unity Movement Lala Shovkat, chairman of Azerbaijan Democratic Party Sardar Jalaloglu and chief of the Public Union for Azerbaijan Eldar Namazov.
