16 January 2008 [10:54] - TODAY.AZ
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev is not taking part in the oath-taking ceremony of the Georgian President, as January 20 is a Mourning Day in Azerbaijan.

The due statement was made by deputy executive secretary of the Yeni Azerbaijan Party, deputy Siyavush Novruzov commenting on the cause of non-participation of the President of Azerbaijan in the inauguration ceremony of the Georgian President.

"As you know, on January 20, 1990, the Soviet troops entered Baku, other big cities and settlements of Azerbaijan, thus suppressing the people, who demanded independence. Over 100 innocent civilians died and many were injured, including women, elderly people and children, in the result of a military action. The Parliament declared this day a Mourning Day. On this day the President and the people of Azerbaijan visit the Alley of Martyrs to honor the memory of those who died for the freedom of their people. Naturally, the President is not able to take part in the ceremonial events, whatever they might be", he said.

The Deputy noted that as a sign of respect to Georgia, Azerbaijan will be represented at the oath-taking ceremony by the second figure in the state, Prime Minister Artur Rasizade.
