The Appeals Court considered the appeal of Mehdi Mehdiyev, member of Musavat Party, accused of organizing mass unrest during the 2003 presidential elections and beating journalist Sahil Kerimli and sentenced to 4 years in jail.

The court changed the decision of the court of first instance and Mehdi Mehdiyev was sentenced to 2 years in jail.

The court applied Article 70 (suspended sentence) of the Criminal Code and Mehdi Mehdiyev was released.

Mehdi Mehdiyev searched for 3 years gave in on September 12. He faced charges under articles 315 (resisting to a governmental official), 233 (organizing or participating in actions causing violation of public order) and 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code and sentenced to 4 years in jail.

Mehdiyev left the country in October, 2003 was granted political asylum in Germany. He was twice arrested in 2006 – for the first time in Greece and the second time in Switzerland but was released. APA
