Iran's ambassador to Azerbaijan stressed the need for the development of his country's cultural, trade, scientific and industrial ties with the Republic of Azerbaijan, and said that expanding ties with Baku sets a priority for Tehran's foreign policy.

Speaking to FNA on the sidelines of a visit to Iran's northern province of Gilan on Monday, Naser Hamidi Zare further pointed out that considering the two countries' cultural and religious commonalities, the two sides need to expand their relations, particularly in cultural and religious areas.

"The two countries' relations are expected to further consolidate through continued mutual cooperation between Tehran and Baku in such different grounds as road construction, customs and border exchanges and transfer of electricity and gas," he continued.

The envoy also noted his meetings with the city and customs officials of the Azeri border town of Astaray, and added that expansion of all-out ties in grounds of customs, removal of the existing problems and barriers and accelerated implementation of the Baku-Astaray road construction project as well as close cooperation between the two sides in all the possible areas comprised the main topics of his talks with the said officials.

The diplomat, who is currently in Iran's border city of Astara, said that his visit to this northern Iranian port city is aimed at studying the different customs problems and issues. Fars News Agency
