Matthew Bryza: "US missile-defense system in Europe aims to neutralize possible missile launch from Iran"

01 April 2007 [16:57] - TODAY.AZ
"The United States does not intend to deploy missile-defense system in the Caucasus, including Georgia," US Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Matthew Bryza said a news conference in Tbilisi, Georgia.

"The US intends to deploy missile-defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic. This system will protect us and our partners against the danger of potential use of nuclear missile. Unlike the United States, Russia possesses this system, which protects Moscow and the surrounding areas. These systems can ensure security of entire Russia. I think there is no need for Russia’s deploying the system in Abkhazia," the US diplomat said.

Bryza underlined that the missile-defense systems to be deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic, which aim to neutralize possible missile launches from Iran, will not create danger to any country, including Russia.

"Russia is participating in our negotiations with our European partners regarding this issue. So, it shows again that these systems do not aim to constitute any threat to Russia," he said. APA
