Khazar Ibrahim: "Situation of human rights in the S. Caucasus is not satisfactory due to Armenia's policy"

15 March 2007 [22:54] - TODAY.AZ
"We can not but agree to Vardan Oskanyan's statement that the situation on human rights in the South Caucasus in the past 15 years is unpleasant.

"But it is surprising that Oskanyan did not say that Armenia's policy is the main cause of the situation on human rights," spokesman to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Khazar Ibrahim said.

Commenting on Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian's speech in the session of UN Human Rights Council Khazar Ibrahim accused him of being unfair.

"The minister falsifies the facts or it is a deceit addressed to internal policy. Oskanian should be sincere and confess that the state of human rights is not satisfactory in the region due to the policy of the country he represents. The minister speaks about ethnic cleansing but forgets that as a result of his country's policy there is no Azerbaijani in Armenia. As a result of this policy Azerbaijan has 1 million refugees. Thousands of Armenians live in Azerbaijan," he said.

The spokesman took a stance on Armenian minister's statement on destruction of Armenian monuments in Nakhchivan.

"The representatives of any organization can visit Azerbaijan and concern themselves with the state of monuments here. One can hardly find a single monument in Armenia and Armenian-occupied Azerbaijani territories. All of them have been destroyed. Unfortunately Armenia pursues policy which aims at wiping out the traces of history," he said.

Khazar Ibrahim also commented on the problem of self-determination of peoples.

"I completely agree to Oskanian's statement about self-determination. But he forgets that Armenians have already realized their self-determination and he is Foreign Minister of the people realized its self-determination. Historical facts should not be forgotten. I would like to mention that when Armenian Democratic Republic was founded Azerbaijani government presented a capital to this republic. Vartan Oskanian should not forget that the people of this region are not only Armenians but also Azerbaijanis and the representatives of the nation lived there before the occupation," Khazar Ibrahim told the APA.
