Turkmenistan, Azeri presidents decide to resume mutual visits

14 March 2007 [07:49] - TODAY.AZ
The presidents of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov and Ilham Aliyev, had a telephone conversation and decided to restore and intensify fully-fledged bilateral contacts, the Turkmen president’s press service said on Tuesday.

"The two sides decided to create bilateral commissions and exchange cultural delegations in order to specify spheres of mutually beneficial cooperation," the press service said.

"Berdymukhammedov and Aliyev also agreed on mutual visits, terms of which will be coordinated by diplomats later," the press service said.

In the epoch of late Turkmen president Saparmurat Niyazov, the bilateral relations were impeded by the unsettled problem of ownership of the Kapaz/Serdar oil field located between the Azerbaijani and Turkmen segments of the Caspian Sea, the press service said.

The presidents have practically had no contacts since 1999. Itar-Tass
