Georgia CIS membership no impediment for NATO entry - Saakashvili

10 March 2007 [15:17] - TODAY.AZ
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said at a press conference on Friday that Georgia's membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) cannot be an obstacle for its entry in NATO.

"The CIS is not a real organisation and NATO is a very serious organisation to join which is very difficult," he noted. In the words of the Georgian president, "The CIS has become a club for meetings of the leaders and from this viewpoint it is definitely useful."

Speaking about prospects for joining the North Atlantic Alliance Saakashvili noted that "in technical terms, Georgia has already passed qualification."

"Now we need the political will, a political decision of all the member states," the Georgian president stressed and urged not to speculate on the admission timeframe. Itar-Tass
