Iranian envoy Afshar Soleymani: "Kidnapping diplomats in Iraq terrorist act"

09 February 2007 [16:42] - TODAY.AZ
Iran's ambassador to Azerbaijan said on Friday that abducting Iranian diplomats in Iraq by the US troops is considered being a terrorist act and violation of international regulations.

Afshar Soleymani made the remarks in a news conference in Baku, adding that international community should properly respond to the US act.

Underlining the need to free Iranian diplomats abducted as soon as possible, he said that such unwise measures in Iraq is not in the interest of the US, and the country is accountable for such terrorist acts.

"Certain countries including the US are trying to impose anarchism to international system, ignoring global regulations and organization," he added.

The US has made strategic and tactical mistakes, on the contrary, The Islamic Republic of Iran tries to settle problems with the Iraqi government through diplomacy, he noted.

The more the US fails in Iraq, the more its international dignity will be questioned by the world public opinion, he said.

Touching on the US threats against Iran, he added that Washington always raises make-believe allegations on Tehran's peaceful nuclear program and is after its biased policy toward Iran.

"The US doesn't bother certain countries which avoid signing Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) such as the Zionist regime," he said.

The ambassador went on to say that Iran has signed NPT and has repeatedly announced that it conducts nuclear activities for civilian purposes, adding that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirms its peaceful activities, but the UN Security Council adopted a resolution against Iran under the pressure of the US.

"The US will not be able to hinder Iran's progress through such hostile acts; Iranians will continue their way and other Muslim nations will also become vigilant more than ever," concluded the ambassador. IRNA
