Iraqi Ambassador: "US invaded Iraq"

24 January 2007 [17:15] - TODAY.AZ
"I am grateful to the Azerbaijani government for participating in Iraq’s liberation. Azerbaijani soldiers are serving in Iraq. Azerbaijan is the only Muslim country that has soldiers in Iraq," Iraqi Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ershad Omar Ismayil said during the meeting with the officers of Institute of Oriental Studies of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

The Ambassador linked the current situation in his country with its rich historical culture and natural resources.

"Iraq has good water and oil. First writing ad law appeared here. Iraq was invaded by England at the beginning of the XX century and by the US at the beginning of the XXI century. When the US invaded Iraq in 2003 I was there. After the invasion by the US the borders remained open for two years. It is true that the US has brought several things to Iraq. The use of mobile phones, watching television and other things were banned before. The US has brought freedom to this country, but most of Iraqis misunderstood the freedom. Any nation can get confused after 35-year dictatorship," he said.

The Ambassador said that there are two forces protesting against Iraq's invasion by the US – terrorists and resistant. He considers that the Shiite-Sunnite confrontation was not created by Iraqis.

"There are Sunnites, Shiites, Arabians, Kurds and Turkmens among my relatives. I am Sunnite. Iraqis are not guilty in the current situation," he said.

The Ambassador said that Baghdad will soon be separated into two parts and the struggle against terrorism will strengthen, APA reports.

"The US will send 21,500 more soldiers to Iraq. 17,500 of them will be placed in Baghdad, 4000 in other places. Our Prime Minister has prepared his own strategy against the new strategy of the US. He will also separate Iraq into two parts. Both parties will have commandants and the explosions will be prevented. We believe that the explosions will be prevented," he said.

The diplomat said that 700 terrorists have been arrested in Iraq up to now. Noting that 90% of the population in the North and South of Iraq are Kurds and Arabians the diplomat said he sees no danger because of it. The diplomat said the main danger is expected in Baghdad, Mosul and Kerkuk.
