Turkmenistan's defense minister Agageldy Mamedgeldyev joined the meeting of the People's Council, or Khalk Maslakhaty - the country's supreme representative body - which is expected to set a date for presidential elections and announce nominations for president.

Turkmenistan national television, which is broadcasting the meeting live, showed Mamedgeldyev's election to the presidium of the People's Council, Interfax news agency reported.

Earlier members of the opposition camp in exile told the Russian paper Vremya Novosti that Defence Minister Agageldy Mamadgeldyev and around 120 further persons had been arrested in the wake of Niyazov's death on December 21.
