US Defense Minister Donald Rumsfeld resigns

09 November 2006 [15:22] - TODAY.AZ
The head of Pentagon Donald Rumsfeld resigned. The president held a press conference and announced that Donald Rumsfeld resigns and nominated the former chief of Central Intelligence Agency, Sovietologist Robert Gates to the post.

But his candidature should be approved by Senate, according to APA.

Rumsfeld's resignation is attributed to election results. George Bush said he was disappointed with election results saying as the nation’s leading Republican he bears part of the blame. He also said they will not pull US troops out from Iraq.

"We will not pull our troops out from Iraq, US will win in Iraq," he said.

The President also said vise-president Richard Cheyni will not resign, too.

The new speaker Nancy Peloci demanded Rumsfeld's resignation and said that she will support anew candidate to the post.

49 representatives were elected from both parties; Montana and Virginia states will influence election results.

Though democrats won in both states, manual counting of votes made the results doubtful in Virginia. That is why George Allen said that he will appeal to the court.

If Allen wins after the court's consideration, the republicans will succeed to preserve the majority in Senate. Democrat Jim Webb said that he announce his victory in the conference today.

But the results of the Virginia state will be announced on November 27 by election bodies.
