Azerbaijan introduces tougher penalties for corruption

Amendments to the Azerbaijan's Criminal Code and the Criminal Punishment Code earlier passed by the parliament and aimed at intensifying the fight against corruption have come into force under Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's Friday decree.

The amendments to the Criminal Code provide for confiscating property acquired through corruption. These amendments allow the confiscation of all types of property regardless of type, an administration official said. The notion of the means of corruption,meaning monetary assets, was introduced to the code, the presidential administration told Interfax.

Amendments to the Criminal Punishment Code provide for increasing the sentence for corruption to up to eight years and categorizing corruption as a grave crime. Interfax
