The delegation of the General Prosecutor's Office led by Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan Zakir Garalov was from October 9 to 11 in Austria to attend the third Session of the Conference of the Member-States of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and hold a number of official meetings.

The visit was paid in the framework of the agreements reached during the national leader Heydar Aliyev's trip to Austria in July of 2000, and the Cooperation Program signed between public prosecutor offices of Azerbaijan and Austria in Baku on 21 September of 2004.

Relations between justice bodies and public prosecutor's offices of the countries were established in 2003-2004 during reciprocal visits of their Justice Ministers, and further enhanced after the official visit to Azerbaijan by Austrian Prosecutor General Walter Presslauer.

Concrete steps needed to be taken towards further enhancement of cooperation between low enforcement bodies, in particular, public prosecutor's offices between the two countries and other related issues were largely discussed during the visit.

During the visit, justice bodies and public prosecutor's offices signed a Memorandum on Mutual Understanding, Cooperation Program and protocols.

Members of the Azerbaijani delegation attended the opening of the 3rd Session of the Conference of the Member-States of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, at which F. Ismaylov, a permanent representative of Azerbaijan to the UN Vienna Office, elected Vice-President of the Conference, spoke on behalf of GUAM.

Speaking on behalf of the Azerbaijan Government Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan Zakir Garalov reported on what has been done and achieved in the country since the 2nd Session in terms of fulfilling the requirements of the Convention.

Members of the Azerbaijani delegation distributed among the Session participants the books about Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan and its bitter consequences, fate of more than a million of refugees and displaced persons, and efforts the Government of Azerbaijan has been taking towards peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Strategic trends of the enhancing cooperation between law enforcement bodies of Azerbaijan and Austria were discussed at a meeting of the Azerbaijani delegation with Austrian Prosecutor General Walter Presslauer. Organization of high-level reciprocal visits, carrying out experience exchange between the representatives of the law enforcement bodies, and conducting training courses for them were defined as priority directions of the cooperation.

In Austria, members of the Azerbaijani delegation met with Chairman of the country's Supreme Court Johan Reschut, Federal Minister of the Interior Mrs. Liese Prokop, Federal Justice Minister Mrs. Karin Gastinger, Deputy Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime Mrs. Sumru Noyan, and other officials.
