PACE Autumn Session starts in Strasbourg

Debates on the situation in the Balkans and on Kosovo, as well as an address by Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany, will be among highlights of the Autumn session of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), to be held in Strasbourg from 2 to 6 October 2006.

APA's European bureau reports though the agenda of the session does not include any issue on Azerbaijan, some issues interested by the country are expected to be discussed. The members of the Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation to PACE have already left for Strasbourg.

The session will open on 3 October with a general policy debate on the situation in the Balkans, with the participation of the Chairperson of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sulejman Tihic, the President of Serbia, Boris Tadic, and the Prime Ministers of Albania, Sali Berisha, and Croatia, Ivo Sanader. This will be followed by an afternoon debate on the current situation in Kosovo, with a statement by Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis.

The Hungarian Prime Minister, Ferenc Gyurcsany, will address the Assembly on Wednesday 4 October at midday and will answer parliamentarians' questions.

A request has been lodged for an urgent debate on the mass arrival of migrants in Europe and this could be held on Thursday 5 October. The parliamentarians will also be discussing the image of migrants in the media on that day.

Also featuring on the agenda are the establishment of a European remembrance centre for victims of forced population movements and ethnic cleansing, the implementation of decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, the cultural situation of the Kurds, the ratification of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and several others.

Sergey Lavrov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, will present the Communication from the Committee of Ministers to the Parliamentary Assembly on Wednesday 4 October.

PACE President Rene van der Linden will give a press conference on Monday 2 October.
