Al Qaeda Chechen member extradited to Russia

Chechnya-born Russian citizen Gadji Chankayev, who was sentenced for seven years in jail by Azerbaijani Court of Appeal, has been extradited to Russia on July 29.

Lawyer for the accused Elman Osmanov told the APA the Russian Prosecutor's Office appealed to the Azerbaijani Prosecutor's Office for Chankayev's extradition to Russia.

Azerbaijani Prosecutor's Office said Chankayev was handed over to Russia for an interim period. The Prosecutor's Office spokesman Vugar Aliyev told the APA that Chankayev will be re-taken to Azerbaijan after three months.

"Gadji Chankayev is reported to have committed crimes in Russia too. Russian side wanted to call him to account for his crimes. Azerbaijani side decided to extradite him in the fames of investigation. The accused will be taken to Azerbaijan to receive punishment after three months. And he will be handed over to Russia after that," the spokesman said.

Chankayev was the member of a 15-member gang, which is facing the charges of terrorist acts, murders. Most of the gang members from Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkey and Yemen were members of religious organizations, including Al Qaeda. They were trained in Georgia, Pankisi camps. The gang members are accused of murdering Baku city, Nasimi district police officer Movlan Alibayov and several other crimes.
