16 May 2006 [20:51] - TODAY.AZ
Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe (PACE) Monitoring Committee co-rapporteurs on Azerbaijan Andreas Gross and Andres Herkel will pay two –day visit to Azerbaijan on May 25.

Giving information to APA Andres Herkel has stated that, the objective of the visit is to study the situation in Azerbaijan since their previous visit.

Co-rapporteurs will meet with state officials as well as opposition parties and non-government organizations representatives, visit persons considered political prisoner, meet with ex-economic development minister Farhad Aliyev.

Andres Herkel has stated that since new rapporteur has not been appointed by PACE with regard to political prisoners ( the previous rapporteur British deputy Malcolm Bruce is not PACE member now) they will be tackling with this problem. Mr.Herkel considers that how much the number of rapporteurs is more that much it will affect the quality of the work: "On this visit's base we will make a report on Azerbaijan in June session of PACE."

Mr.Herkel said that the report on re-run elections in Azerbaijan prepared by Leo Platvoet will be used in the report which will be submitted in June session.

"Since I am not familiar with the Observation Mission leader Leo Platvoet's report on May 13 elections I can not say anything."

According to Mr.Herkel the main thing is that election results should reflect electors will, re-run elections were to be held in more Constituencies.
