Jewish forum could be held in Baku in Autumn

15 May 2006 [19:36] - TODAY.AZ
Israel views the Muslim countries of the former USSR as partners for dialogue and cooperation, Josef Shagal, a deputy of the Israeli Ksennet and head of Parliamentary Friendship Association "Israel-Azerbaijan" said at a press conference today in Baku.

According to Turan news agency, concerning the Israeli-Azerbaijani relations, Shagal said he wished the "nice form" of relations between the two states was "productive and qualitative content-wise." He spoke about an "information vacuum" about Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan's only representation in Israel is the air company "AZAL." During his visit to the United States, President Ilham Aliyev said that s question on the opening of Embassy in Israel "has been solved in principle." However, understanding the scrupulousness of this question, Shagal pointed out the possibility of opening an Azerbaijan cultural center or some trade representation first.

The head of the General Council of European Congress Josef Zissels said that their visit was aimed at developing Israeli-Azerbaijani relations and the use of the US's Jewish Lobby to protect Azerbaijan's interests in America.

According to Zissels, the Eurasian Jewish Congress unites communities from 26 countries (from Australia to Poland and Slovenia) and, with the help of the Jewish Lobby in the USA, it tries to eliminate Section 907, adopted in 1992, and the Jackson-Venik Amendment adopted in 1974.

Zissels expressed "regret" to the idea of unification of South and Northern Azerbaijan, and readiness "to support these efforts." Concerning the postponement of joint World and Eurasian Jewish congresses. The forum was supposed to be held in the middle of May in Baku Zissels said that it was supposed to hold in Baku the Forum "Jewish in the Caucasus", however it was postponed because the World Jewish Congress's President Edgar Broffmann was ill. Zissels denied that there were political reason for postponement of the forum. He said that the conduction of the Forum would instead be conducted in autumn this year.
