Georgian Embassy in Azerbaijan deprived of premises

15 May 2006 [19:25] - TODAY.AZ
The Azerbaijani government deprived the Georgian Embassy of premises in Baku.

This happened because the Georgian party failed to fulfill obligations for granting land for the Azeri Embassy in Tbilisi.

Early this year Georgian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Zurab Gumberizde was invited to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry and warned of the situation. With time no changes took place and the diplomat was ordered to hand the keys.

In 2000 the two states agreed on providing the embassies with premises on a parity basis. The Azeri side fulfilled the obligations and provided the Georgian Embassy with a building within a short term. However Georgia failed to provide the Azeri diplomatic mission with a proper building. As result the Embassy had to function in rented quarters.

According to an Azeri diplomat, Azerbaijan was forced to terminate the agreement one-sidedly.

The Azerbaijani government will purchase a site or a building for the Embassy in Tbilisi.
