Movlut Chavushoglu: "We witnessed serious improvements in repeat elections in Azerbaijan"

15 May 2006 [18:24] - TODAY.AZ
"We witnessed serious improvements in Saturday's partial repeat parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan.

We made public what we witnessed and drew up a report," Council of Europe Parlaimentary Assembly (PACE) Election Observation Mission member, Turkish parliamentarian Movlut Chavushoglu stated with regard to the 13 May partial re-elections in Azerbaijan, APA informs.

He said the observation mission's assessment of the elections is objective and reflects reality. Mr. Chavushoglu noted that he observed the elections not as Turkish parliamentarian but as one of the 20 members of PACE mission. The mission made its final assessment by consolidating opinions of all the 20 observers.

The Turkish parliament member also said the final assessment will be submitted to the PACE Monitoring Committee for drawing up a report.

Commenting on the issue on credentials of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, Chavushoglu said that he will support issuing credentials to the delegation in the June session of the organization.

"I made my remarks on every problem I witness during my meetings in Baku. I support Azerbaijan at the same time reporting about these problems in PACE sittings. It is our duty," the parliamentarian said.

He thinks the opposition is not right by demanding Azerbaijan's removal from the Council of Europe due to the existing problems.

"Neither a Turkish nor an Azerbaijani should demand it. It is not easy to become the Council of Europe member again," Chavushoglu stressed.
