Prosecutors disscuss corruption and other economic crimes

Seminar on the theme "The main directions of fight against corruption and other economic crimes" was held on May 12 at the Education Center of the republican Public Prosecutor's Office, its press service announced.

In his opening remark Rustam Usubov, the first deputy of the Prosecutor General, reminded the seminar participants that it was national leader Heydar Aliyev who was the first in the Soviet Union to initiate implacable fight against corruption, one of the most dangerous kinds of organized crime, and continued it by taking even tougher measures after returning - upon people's request - to political power in Azerbaijan in 1993.

He said that the Decree "On strengthening the fight against crime, and measures to ensure rule of law" signed by President Heydar Aliyev on August 9 of 1994 set concrete directions of fighting organized crime and corruption, and pointed to the necessity to take relevant preventive measures.

According to Rustam Usubov, the Presidential Decree of June 8, 2000 "On strengthening the fight against corruption in the Republic of Azerbaijan" marked the beginning of a new stage of fighting corruption in the country rapidly integrating into European space. "The Decision by President Ilham Aliyev to establish anti-corruption department under the Prosecutor General was valued as giving a vote of confidence to prosecutors on a state level," he pointed out.

Other issues discussed at the seminar were theoretical aspect of the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan On fight against corruption; taking judicial persons into consideration as subjects of corruption-related offences as a result of transposing of European conventions into national law; the activities of the working group created in accordance with instructions by the Head of State Ilham Aliyev at the republican Office of Public Prosecutor to organize fight against the facts of use of forged invoices seriously damaging the country's economy, as well as proposals to eliminate this kind of offences, and the work done by anti-corruption department under the Prosecutor General.

Participants noted that the seminar is of both theoretical and practical importance in the field of organizing fight against corruption.

The seminar held in an atmosphere of lively debate and interesting discussions was also attended by Inam Kerimov, Sr. Consultant at the Presidential Administration's Department of Work with Law Enforcement Bodies, Secretary of the Commission on fight against corruption under the Public Service Administration Council, AzerTAg reports.
