Bulgarian observers content with election results

14 May 2006 [21:39] - TODAY.AZ
Bulgarian observers have praised the conduct of Azerbaijan's repeat elections held on Saturday.

According to Assa-Irada, the chairman of the Civil Initiative for Free and Democratic Elections organization heading the Bulgarian observation mission, Ilia Bajinov, said the elections were generally democratic and no serious violations were registered. The conduct of the poll improved compared to last year's parliamentary elections, he told a news conference on Sunday.

The head of the mission mentioned some irregularities, saying these were mainly observed in ballot stations. He said the biggest problem concerned voter lists, as a number of voters whose names were not included in the documents were unable to exercise their suffrage right.

"Nonetheless, these drawbacks did not have an impact on the overall election results," Bajinov said.

The observer highly assessed the population's attitude toward exit polls conducted by his organization. Compared to Bulgaria, Azeri voters were more actively involved in the surveys, he said.
