Local NGOs say election re-run democratic

14 May 2006 [21:18] - TODAY.AZ
Two local NGOs have issued initial assessments of joint observations held during the Saturday repeat elections to the Azeri parliament in ten constituencies.

686 people were involved in the observations conducted by the Association on Assistance to Civil Society Development and the Transparent Election Monitoring Center, the former's vice-president Vali Alibayov told journalists on Sunday, AssA-Irada informs.

The head of the organization's observation group, Vasif Movsumov, said they faced some problems with the registration of observers and observations in the Gadabay district constituency. He said the by-elections were free and fair, with the exception of some minor shortcomings.

The coordinator of exit polls, Irada Yagubova, said the Association held exit polls and "Quick Counts" in 93 polling stations jointly with a Bulgarian NGO. She noted that people have changed their attitude toward the surveys compared to previous years.

"Whereas voters were refusing to take part in exit polls during the previous election, they showed interest in participating this time," Yagubova said.
