YAP gains half of mandates in parliament by-elections

14 May 2006 [18:59] - TODAY.AZ
The ruling Yeni Azerbaijan party has gained half of mandates in parliamentary by-elections in ten districts.

Independent candidates are victorious in three districts, while candidates of the opposition Adalyat and Civil Solidarity parties lead in another two.

The turnout reached 36.48% or 140,000, a source at the Azerbaijani Central Elections Commission told Itar-Tass on Sunday with the reference to preliminary information.

The by-elections were held in areas, where the Central Elections Commission and Constitutional Court invalidated results of the November 6 ballot because of serious violations.

International observers from the CIS, the OSCE, the Council of Europe and PACE will assess the by-elections later in the day.

In keeping with the Election Code, the Central Elections Commission will sum up the first preliminary official results of the by-election two days after the ballot, and post the official results in 20 days. The Constitutional Court will have ten days for analyzing the ballot outcome.
